WHAT WE DO

Learning Platform

We provide formative resources on diverse bioethical topics, including: abortion, euthanasia, conscience rights, palliative care, genetic and reproductive technologies, and more.

MENTORING PROGRAMS

We cultivate community through conferences, symposia, and mentoring programs. Our mentoring programs entail: one-on-one mentoring 1-2 times per month; a monthly mentoring sheet on the CanMEDS roles to strengthen growth in specific virtues; access to the OptimalWork subscription program and so much more. We have mentoring available for medical students and residents, pre-med students, nursing students, and midwifery students.

BOOK GROUPS

Our Book Group is a key way for individuals to engage the literature on relevant topics that healthcare professionals need to be aware of, but might not have the time to read on their own. Coming together routinely and in a small group setting allows book group participants to learn from others and to share authentically so as to really get the most out of the book and each other.

Check out our book groups and register for the next available book study.

CRISIS LINE

We provide legal support to physicians and students as they face ethical and professional dilemmas. A constitutional lawyer is available for up to an hour, free of charge.

CASE CONSULT

The Case Consult Service is a resource for healthcare practitioners who would like help addressing an ethical question or problem related to a patient’s care.

Case consultations are not formal consultations but instead are designed to support healthcare professionals involved in ethically challenging situations.

Complete the form to be put in touch with a colleague who has a background in ethics. These consultations are not formal in nature but are useful when you want to talk through an issue with a trusted colleague.

What do I need to know about you as a person to give you the best care possible?”

Dr. Harvey Chochinov

“The calling and the conduct of the doctor is care for others, and the meeting of doctor and patient is a supreme occasion for being human.”

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

“You matter because you are you. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.”

Dame Cicely Saunders

“The secret is not to be afraid of [powerlessness] – not to run away. The dying know that we are not God… All they ask is that we do not desert them.”

Dr. Sheila Cassidy
